Portuguese eGates project

by Mark Rowe

At the new arrivals and departures terminal at Lisbon’s International airport the latest version of Vision-Box S.A.’s Automated Border Control eGate, vb i-match 5 has been fitted.

The Automated Border Control eGates are divided between arrivals and departures and feature a two-step border control process where verification of the travel document is done first, while the traveller is outside the eGate, and then once inside the eGate, facial recognition takes place. If all is validated the passenger is allowed to continue. Besides electronic passport verification, the ABC eGates are also able to process the Portuguese National Citizen Card and the non-electronic passport, with pilot projects implemented for Brazilian and Angolan nationals, holders of Diplomatic or Special Passports.

The Portuguese ABC eGates project, designated by the name RAPID, has been in production since 2007.

vb i-match 5 is the multimodal ABC eGate developed by Vision-Box and supporting iris, fingerprint and facial recognition biometrics.

According to Manuel Palos, National Director of SEF (the Portuguese Immigration and Border Service), “the new ABC eGates will allow us to optimize and streamline the border crossing process while maintaining the same level of security and border integrity”.

Miguel Leitmann, Senior Vice President of Vision-Box S.A., adds that “today, as in 2007, Portugal continues in the forefront of automated border control and Vision-Box is delighted to continue to support SEF and have a positive impact in keeping Portuguese borders safe while at the same time providing a good passenger experience”.
