The importance of effective access control for construction sites

by Mark Rowe

One of the most common challenges faced on construction sites is the management of workers, particularly during large-scale, long-term projects in which there could be hundreds of staff and deliveries coming and going at any given time. To help overcome this difficulty, the most efficient site owners and managers have begun to invest in one of the smartest new forms of site security – access control.

Millennium Security, who are specialists in providing construction security solutions across the UK, explain why installing a modern access control system on your site is highly beneficial.

Control who enters your site

With high-value tools and machinery present throughout the duration of a project, construction sites are ideal targets for theft, particularly during holiday seasons or out-of-hours. Access control systems allow you to manage the flow of people into your site, allowing only authorised people to gain entry. The latest access control systems make use of biometric fingerprint technology, making it much more difficult for would-be criminals or unauthorised staff to enter, which greatly reduces the risk of theft, vandalism or arson. Moreover, these electronic systems are efficient, saving the time and costs involved in visual site authorisation checks, like manually inspecting staff CSCS cards.

Effectively monitor staff

The latest biometric access control systems enable site managers to easily monitor who is onsite at any time. They also provide other pieces of smart data, including the time of day that each member of staff checked in and out of their shifts, which makes staff management as straightforward as possible. The systems can also provide reporting information, including timesheet analysis and delivery data.

Comply with health and safety standards

As a site manager, you need to be able to show that you are adhering to industry health and safety standards, which of course includes the protection of staff and the general public. Introducing an access control system means you are able to better report on your site’s health and safety performance, as well as being able to implement CSCS audits.
Introducing a CSCS SmartCard verification system provides a simple and effective way to detect whether the people working on your construction site are correctly trained and certified. If an expired or counterfeit CSCS card is detected, the system can automatically lock that person out so that they cannot gain entry to the site in future.

Delivery tracking

Deliveries have never been easier with access control, helping site managers effectively plan future deliveries so that they can make better informed decisions on where to allocate the resources available to them. When site deliveries occur, the systems allow for rapid sign-offs, since they only allow authorised people and vehicles to enter the site.

Quickly report incidents

Incidents which take place onsite can be reported easily, enabling site managers to monitor staff behaviour and automatically invoke restrictions on certain individuals if and where necessary, following a penalty system.

Manage multiple projects

If you are responsible for the management of a number of different sites, a central system can allow you to seamlessly manage them all in one place, giving you real-time data and monitoring staff activity across your entire network.
