Secured by Design (SBD), the national police crime prevention initiative, marked its 30th anniversary with the launch of a new alarm standard at IFSEC 2019 in June. Pictured are Ken Meanwell and SBD CEO Guy Ferguson with Mike Reddington and David Wilkinson from the BSIA, Robert Conlon from the NSI, and Alex Carmmichael from the SSAIB.
SBD’s work includes security rated products; mainly in physical security, such as doors and windows. More than 800 SBD member companies produce various crime prevention products; but this has not included intruder alarm installers.
SBD’s new Alarm Standard is not a replacement for the National Police Chiefs Council Security Systems Policy (NPCC SSP), or an alternative for certification by a UKAS accredited certification body (as delivered by NSI or SSAIB), but incorporates the criteria.
Installers meeting the SBD standard now have the option of joining the new SBD scheme, after an assessment from their alarm inspectorate, enabling members to utilise the ‘Police Preferred Specification’ branding and SBD adds gaining a marketing advantage. SBD is the only way for companies to obtain police accreditation for security-related products, services or installations in the UK.
Ken Meanwell, Compliance Manager, Police Crime Prevention Initiatives, said: “The introduction of the SBD standard for security systems will give installers the opportunity to install a high quality alarm system with police response. SBD systems have been specifically designed to reduce false calls, which will reduce the risk for end users.”
