Access Control

Access control readers

by Mark Rowe

For many years the access control and security industry concentrated on the security of the data exchange between the access control credential (card) and the reader, says the reader manufacturer Third Millennium.

Early systems were quickly compromised when cards were cloned and security was breached. Encrypting the data between the card and reader provided a more secure interface but there was still a weak link in the system. Having encrypted the card to reader data, this data was then passed to the access control system using industry standard Wiegand protocol; an unencrypted signal that is easily intercepted and copied.

The RX series OSDP Secure readers, pictured, offer complete end to end security, according to Third Millennium. This provides certainty that the access control system is protected from start to finish by providing secure encryption of the data from the card right the way through to the host controller. This prevents unencrypted data being intercepted at any point in the system.

The RX series readers have a clean and sleek style of design and are the firm says for surface mounting directly to most plain wall finishes. It also fits onto a UK, EU or North American electrical backbox. This reader has a clean aesthetic and features an RGB LED that can be applied to many applications, such as colour access levels, migration status or mood lighting. Visit www.tm-readers.com.
