Wireless locks in London hotels

by Mark Rowe

The Lancaster Landmark Hotel Company has installed dormakaba’s Saflok Quantum Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) enabled locks in The Landmark London, Royal Lancaster London and K West Hotel & Spa.

The Landmark London, on Marylebone Road in central London, was first to have the locks fitted. When the hotel was refurbished and reopened in 1993, Kaba locks were installed throughout. For its 120th anniversary, the five star hotel has undergone a multi-million-pound refurbishment including upgrading the guest rooms’ access control. After a competitive tender, the dormakaba Qauntum locks were selected as the replacement.

Kelvin Nicolay, Security Manager at The Landmark London said: “We were looking for a like-for-like replacement for the existing system but with modern functionality. Having considered a range of options it was the Saflok Quantum system that met all our requirements. It offered all the monitoring and audit functionality we needed and thorough research found the dormakaba system to be extremely secure – something that was among our top priorities.”

The wireless RFID (Radio-frequency identification) locks are suitable the product firm says for such retrofit projects as they require less work when compared with a wired product. At The Landmark London, the hotel assigned decorators to work with installers.

These wireless locks are controlled through an online management system. The Saflok Quantum Messenger LENS offers a two-way communication between the reception or security desk and the hotel’s electronic locks to monitor and control room door activity. Staff can cancel lost keys, extend a guest’s stay or change a guest’s room remotely. It also allows remote keycard audits to review keycard usage on specific locks.

The security team at the hotel also receive notifications for any doors that are left ajar, and ‘wandering or standing intruder’ alerts when a keycard fails on multiple doors or when multiple cards fail on one door. Also, the system issues low battery warnings to help with organising planned preventative maintenance.

Saflok Quantum products have since been installed at the Royal Lancaster London, on the edge of Hyde Park; and the group’s newest London property, the contemporary K West Hotel & Spa.

As for future requirements, the Saflok Quantum locks support mobile access, for guests to use their mobile phones to unlock their rooms. While it is not used, the intention is to eventually roll that out at all three London hotels in the Group.
