Station safety awards

by Mark Rowe

Two Southeastern stations have received an award for station safety. The award, part of the Secure Stations Scheme managed by the Department for Transport and British Transport Police, is in recognition of work to ensure a safe environment for passengers and staff.

Charles Horton, managing director of Southeastern said: “We are proud of the work that our station staff have put in at both Dunton Green and Stone Crossing and it shows our commitment at Southeastern to provide a secure and safe environment for our passengers.”

The awards, presented at Dunton Green and Stone Crossing at separate events on Friday, July 19, by the Michael Fallon MP for Sevenoaks and Gareth Johnson, MP for Dartford, is an acknowledgement of the effort to deter crime and anti-social behaviour. The awards are made by the Department for Transport on the recommendation of British Transport Police.

To achieve an award, the train operator must demonstrate:
*That crime is reduced at the station
*That measures including CCTV, adequate lighting and the deployment of enforcement staff are in place to deter crime
*That staff have conflict management knowledge
*That staff work in partnership with the BTP and county police forces
*That in an independently conducted survey, passengers actually feel safer when at the station.

Michael Fallon MP for Sevenoaks said: “Public transport isn’t just about getting people from A to B on time, they must also arrive safely at their destination. I want to congratulate the Dunton Green station team on the hard work they’ve clearly put in to win this award. This award recognises that fact.”

Gareth Johnson MP for Dartford said: “I am delighted that Stone Crossing station has been awarded Safer Station accreditation by the Department for Transport. This award recognises the priority given by Southeastern to the safety of passengers and staff at Stone Crossing. I am sure that this award will provide reassurance for people living in Stone that their safety is being taken seriously by Southeastern and the Department for Transport.”

The National Secure Stations Scheme covers all rail and underground networks which are policed by British Transport Police. Nearly 100 stations on the Southeastern network have received the award.
