Project of the year

by Mark Rowe

The contract guarding firm STM Group (UK) Ltd was named as winner of the ‘Security Project of the Year’ Award at the Security & Fire Excellence Awards 2020 last Wednesday.

STM Group, an ACS Pacesetters company, offers security, cleaning, and customer-focused services. The company was named British Security Industry ”Business of the Year 2020”, then gained a Transport for London (TfL) award for “Transport Supplier of the Year 2020”. This was for STM’s work in supporting Network Rail in the delivery of the Trespass & Welfare suicide prevention project; as featured in the October print edition of Professional Security magazine.

Since the project began in late 2019, STM personnel have prevented over 100 suicide attempts, as well as assisting many more vulnerable people through the presence of trained “Welfare” staff at over 30 stations. Some of these heroes were featured in a video (prepared by STM Group) for World Suicide Prevention Day. STM trespass and welfare officers (pictured) working for rail operators and others shared remarkable stories about how they helped prevent a suicide.

Run by the exhibitions IFSEC International and FIREX International, the Security & Fire Excellence Awards celebrate industry people, projects and processes.

STM CEO Paul Jacomb says: “To be recognised by IFSEC for the positive work undertaken by STM in successful delivery of the Trespass and Welfare Project is, indeed, a proud moment. A policy of continuous improvement, and working as “One Team”, is now endemic with the organisation. Never has this culture been more important than in the critical work we have been asked to undertake on this particular project.

“We could not have achieved this award without the invaluable support and advice of Network Rail, with whom it has been our pleasure to help develop a successful suicide mitigation strategy. Nevertheless, saving lives within the rail environment is a continuous challenge, for which a proactive approach (in all areas) remains an absolute pre-requisite. We will continue to do everything we can to support Network Rail, and the railway infrastructure, in order minimise fatalities, and ensure a successful outcome to all interventions.”

And STM’s Head of Marketing and Communications, Arevika Stepanian, says: ‘I am extremely delighted for STM Group to receive this external recognition for all the hard work, in often difficult circumstances, on this unique project. Our frontline heroes have shown great determination to ensure that the public is looked after and receiving the best possible care and service. Congratulations once again to all the team at STM, and indeed to everyone shortlisted.’
