Passenger transport topic

by Mark Rowe

How mobile CCTV can work for mass transit was a topic for the Passenger Transport and Executive Group (PTEG) on February 12. CEO of Vemotion Stewart McCone was invited by Centro Crime Reduction Manager and chair of PTEG Safety and Security Group Mark Babington.

McCone, pictured, spoke of the company and its wireless video transmission products. PTEG takes in Britain’s six main public transport bodies. Stewart said afterwards that he used his presentation to dispel some popular and enduring myths about CCTV.

McCone said: “The focus with CCTV tends to be on fixed installations, but as I aimed to demonstrate to the PTEG team, it is so much more than that. CCTV could be a valuable tool in delivering improvements in driver and passenger safety, for example and I am grateful to Mark for giving me the opportunity to shine a light not just on Vemotion, but to consider wireless video transmission solutions in the wider transport context and not just in terms of parking enforcement in bus lanes.”

As featured in the May 2013 print issue of Professional Security, Mark Babington brought West Midlands Police, British Transport Police and a private security contractor into an intelligence led operational team, reducing crime on the network by two thirds – but work remains to be done, hence inviting Stewart.

Mark Babington said: “As the Safer Travel Partnership has faced the realities of austerity, we have developed an innovative approach which has seen an increase of frontline staff whilst reducing revenue expenditure by 25 per cent. In my role as the National chair of PTEG safety and Security, mobile CCTV does have a role to play and I would like to thank Stewart for coming and giving us the benefit of his insight and know-how.”

Based in North Yorkshire, Vemotion offer wireless video transmission for town centre management, crowd control, mobile and deployable CCTV, as used at outdoor events in 2014 including Yorkshire stages of the Tour de France and Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

“Vemotion transmission technologies can be a much more subtle tool than is often appreciated and making the case before thought leaders like PTEG is essential,” added Stewart.

Mark said: “We raise awareness of the key transport challenges facing city regions but we also look at the solutions our members are implementing too. Mobile CCTV is one of the ways we can look at reducing expenditure by doing more for less and while bus shelter cameras proved a great success, driver and passenger safety will always be prime considerations as part of our Public Transport Crime Reduction Toolkit.”
