Marine exchange

by Mark Rowe

A Maritime Security conference is being held as a part of Oceanology International 2014, the exhibition for marine science and technology on Tuesday to Thursday, March 11 to 13, at London’s ExCeL.

The one day Maritime Security conference, chaired by Professor Michael Bruno, Dean, School of Engineering and Science, Stevens Institute of Technology, USA and Justin Crump, Chief Executive, Sibylline Risk and Security Consultancy, UK is running on Wednesday, March 12. It will examine new and emerging technologies to support: underwater security; threat assessment and decision-making; intelligence and data handling; people and process; sensor integration and information fusion; and examples of government/private sector/academic partnerships.

Prof Bruno says: “I am looking forward to a very vibrant exchange among a group of speakers and attendees representing organizations that span the entire globe. Each speaker will describe their own views on the most urgent challenges facing the maritime security community, and their organizations’ efforts to address these challenges.

“A common theme that will likely emerge from the presentations and discussions is the need for an integrated, systems approach to underwater security, with multiple sensor modalities providing awareness and response capabilities over very wide areas of operation.

“This approach can only be successful if maritime security operators and technology developers come together in forums such as Oceanology International, so it is important that you attend!”

The conference, which, like all the component parts of Oceanology International, is free to attend, has presentations already confirmed:

Enabling Advanced Autonomous In-Ocean Security Networks, Paul Watson, Ocean Power Technologies
Big Data Management for the Surveillance and Security of Underwater Wide Zones, Dr Zoheir Sabeur, University of Southampton IT Innovation Centre
Implementation of a National Dual-Use High Frequency Radar Network, Hugh Roarty, Rutgers University
The Role of Unmanned Ocean Surface Vehicles for Maritime Security Applications in the FP7 PERSUS Project, Eduardo Quevedo, Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands
Ambient Noise Measurement- Challenges and Benefits Using Military Systems, Daniel Toogood, Atlas Elektronik
Long Term, Remote Marine Surveillance Utilizing the Wave Glider Autonomous Surface Vehicle, Jamie Griffith, Liquid RoboticsAlso on the conference scene
Ocean science and technology lie at the very heart of OI 2014, with the conference programme picking up on each major technology strand featured in the exhibition. As well as the traditional areas, all relevant to marine renewables – ocean observing systems, hydrography, geophysics, and site investigation; and dealing with UUV development, there are two new conference programmes this year – underwater positioning and metrology; and underwater communications.

Oil & gas ‘Operating in Extreme Environments’; and the expanding world of marine renewables both also come under the conference. Topical panel discussions looking at areas which are creating a growing demand for marine science and technology – aquaculture, ballast water and subsea mining are an OI 2014 introduction.

The exhibitor directory is on the show’s website at www.oceanologyinternational.com/Exhibitor-Directory/# categorises exhibits – with maritime security being one of the options available.

Visitors can also see vessels dockside, and dockside demonstrations; and associated events run by supporting organisations.
