DfT training approval

by Mark Rowe

Maritime Asset Security and Training (MAST) Ltd, the maritime security and training firm, reports that the Department for Transport’s Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) has approved MAST’s three new training courses. They are: Ship Security Officer’s course (SSO), Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA) and Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD).

The approval means that MAST can now act as a MCA certified training provider in these disciplines. The PDSD became mandatory in January 2013 and the PSA becomes mandatory in January 2014.

The training company has recently opened a new firing range on Gozo. The firm has also just obtained City & Guilds accreditation for its Level 3 Maritime Security Operatives course. The trainers also have approval from Enhanced Learning Credits Administration System which means it is accredited to offer training programmes to UK armed forces’ personnel enabling them to use MoD learning credits.

The trainers can also offer bespoke courses as required and instruction can be given either on board or at the MAST Training Centre in Malta.

Phillip Cable, CEO of MAST, pictured, said: “Our training business is moving from strength to strength and we are extremely pleased that these core training courses have been approved by the MCA, giving us the most highly regarded certification in the UK for these disciplines. We have been seeing growing interest from maritime security companies and operatives, shipping groups and governments for the specialist security training that we are able to offer, particularly as shipping companies, captains and insurers look to protect vessels from the threat of piracy and other maritime security threats.”
