Airport install for HSR

by Mark Rowe

The ‘Human Security Radar’ (HSR) from Apstec Systems has been selected by Esenboga Airport in Ankara, for use in land side areas. Having come through a pilot installation, HSR will be installed at the terminal entrances as part of security work by the Turkish State Airports Authority. The manufacturer Apstec describe it as automated real-time mass people screening. It will enable people screening without slowing down the flow of traffic, with each system capable of scanning up to 10,000 people per hour. The product was deployed with local distributer AKBA.

As the product firm says, the recent attacks on Ataturk Airport in Istanbul and Brussels Airport highlighted the vulnerability of the land side of airports to terrorism. In securing the land side of airports, traditional aviation-style checkpoints or manual searches, which scan one individual at a time, can result in queues, vulnerable to attack in their own right. Hence terminals may remain susceptible to attack, or are subject to intrusive and disruptive security screening regimes.

HSR as a ‘walkthrough’ product screening multiple subjects in real-time for threats, without the need for an operator to inspect suspect materials. Some 40,000 passengers are travelling through Esenboga daily.

Osman Aksoy and Sirzat Balin, co-founders of AKBA, said: “HSR constitutes a major breakthrough in the way airports protect the land side of terminals. Through deploying HSR as part of its commitment to terminal safety and enhanced security measures, the Turkish Airport Authority has taken a major step to prevent the reoccurrence of terrorist attacks.”

The company was among exhibitors at the International Security Expo 2018 at London Olympia last week.
