RIPA guide

by Mark Rowe

The local government risk managers body Alarm, with practitioners and sponsors, has produced ‘A good practice guide on the use of surveillance, for the purpose of investigating Insurance Claims’, covering how the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (RIPA) applies within this field.

As Alarm points out, managers of risk who have a responsibility for insurance or claims handling will no doubt be aware that covert surveillance is a tool that can reap benefits in defending liability claims and Alarm wants to ensure that helpful and clear guidance is provided.

Wayne Rigby, Alarm Vice Chairman, said: “When dealing with liability claims within the public service arena, we are always mindful that we are dealing with monies from the public purse. I like many managers of risk, will wish to utilise every tool available to ensure claims are dealt with as robustly as possible and settlements and costs are kept to a minimum, the use of surveillance being one such tool. This guide aims to clarify the use of RIPA and its application when dealing with insurance claims. This guide will be the first of many ‘Alarm Knowledge’ guides we will be offering to support our members, providing a valuable resource and reference facility.”

The guide is an Alarm member benefit which can be downloaded from the Alarm website. To access this guide and other advice, join Alarm – from £150 plus VAT. Visit http://www.alarm-uk.org.
