Policing Diploma

by Mark Rowe

Cambridge Regional College (CRC) has announced a new Higher Education Policing Diploma programme in response to the recent announcement that all new police recruits in the UK must be educated to degree level by 2020.

The National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) made the decision to upskill the forces in an attempt to counteract the growing complexity and nature of police work in an age of cyber-enabled crime. Prospective new officers will have to complete a degree apprenticeship, a postgraduate conversion course or a full University degree. Current officers will largely be unaffected but will also have to complete a degree if they wish to be promoted to assistant chief constable or above.

The new CRC course, the Higher National Certificate in Policing, is being launched this year, with the Higher National Diploma in Policing being launched in 2019. This will allow learners to progress towards the full degree qualification. CRC says that studying the course will provide opportunities for students to learn techniques and tools essential for successful performance and will feature specific topics of focus such as Criminal Law, the Criminal Justice Service and Diversity within the Police Service. The Credits gained on the new course can be used towards a full degree qualification in the future.

Cambridge Regional College offers full-time, part-time and Higher Education courses with campuses in Huntingdon and Cambridge. The College’s Uniform Public Services programmes are already providers of entry-level courses for those considering careers within services such as the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, Fire Brigade, Ambulance, Paramedics, Customs & Excise and private security.

Mark Robertson, Principal and Chief Executive of Cambridge Regional College, said: “We are very proud to see the launch of this new higher educational offering for Policing. Having been an exemplar of Uniformed Public Services training in the region at levels 1 to 5 for many years, and with our excellent partnership working with the local police forces, we knew that we would be perfectly positioned to provide a specialised pathway towards the upcoming entry demands for the police. It is outstanding to see how people grow and develop both self-confidence and stature over the course of these programmes and we are privileged to be helping to train the future candidates for the police force for Cambridgeshire and surrounding counties.”

Assistant Chief Constable Dan Vajzovic of Cambridgeshire Constabulary said: “I am delighted to see the launch of the Higher National Certificate Course in Policing at CRC. It will allow our local young people to gain a useful insight into policing and will help them in moving on to achieve the necessary qualifications for future entry into the police service. We have a long and successful partnership with the college and are pleased to be supporting them in delivering some aspects of the course.”

The new higher education qualifications will be available to study at both the Cambridge and Huntingdon Campuses, with the first programme set to commence in September 2018 and running for two years. Applications for the course are open. Visit www.camre.ac.uk.
