Police take crime prevention qualification

by Mark Rowe

The Isle of Man’s police service has become the latest whose officers have taken a crime prevention qualification, as Neighbourhood Policing is re-launched on the island.

Officers and partner agency colleagues are taking the accredited Level 3 Award in Introduction to Crime Prevention qualification delivered by the Police Crime Prevention Academy, a ProQual approved centre with a link to Secured by Design.

Formed in 1863, the constabulary polices the island’s 221 square miles ns 80,000 residents. The force is split into four neighbourhood policing teams (NPT) – Northern, Western, Southern and Eastern.

Darren Richards, Temporary Chief Inspector, Isle of Man Police, said: “It is vitally important that we invest in training for our work force within the Neighbourhood Specialist roles. This will ultimately give the officers the skills to identify the root cause of crime, and deal with a particular issue using a problem solving approach to ensure there is no reoccurrence and that crime rates remain low on the island. Our partners included representatives from both probation and the fire service.

“As part of the programme officers have been given bespoke local projects to look at helping to reduce crime and keeping people safe.”

At the Academy, the Head of Academy Guy Collyer said: “The Academy is delighted to have the opportunity to support the Isle of Man Constabulary in its drive to work in partnership with local communities and other agencies on the island to help reduce and prevent crime.

“Locations like the Isle of Man have a unique outlook which the Academy can reflect in the content of crime prevention qualifications and events that are delivered locally.”

About the Level 3 Award

It’s aimed at anyone whose role will involve providing practical crime prevention advice. This includes being able to undertake domestic surveys and make recommendations incorporating suitable security products. The qualification can be dovetailed into CPD for officers and staff, as well as providing a stepping stone to the specialist qualification of the Level 4 Certificate in Crime Prevention for Practitioners.

The Academy is part of Police Crime Prevention Initiatives (PCPI), the police-owned body; it also delivers a number of qualifications to the private sector and seeks to work closely with local authorities and relevant specialists such as architects and planners.
