Peter Greenwood Award

by Mark Rowe

The 2017 Peter Greenwood Award has gone to Paul Tennent, Tavcom Training co-founder and Group Sales Director. Each year it goes to an individual to mark their contribution to the security systems industry. The presentation was during the Security and Fire Excellence Awards, in London on Wednesday, November 22.

Paul Tennent has made contributions to the BSIA Technical Sections, SSC Strategy, CCTV User Group and National Occupational Standards. Recently, he has been one of those behind a professional register for Certified Technical Security Professionals (CTSP), that launched in September 2017.

Paul, pictured, says: “Well trained and dedicated security professionals are the lifeblood of our industry. It is with a sense of great responsibility that we provide access to the latest knowledge and skills needed for those working in the professional technical security sector. I am immensely proud that today, Tavcom is the world’s leading provider of BTEC accredited security systems training courses and I receive this award on behalf of my entire team.”

That CTSP meanwhile has received over 200 applications to join. The CTSP Register has been endorsed in the UK by the British Security Industry Association (BSIA), the SSAIB inspectorate, and internationally by Dubai’s Security Industry Regulatory Agency (SIRA). As its organisers say it represents the only opportunity for installers and those who maintain security/fire systems, to be officially recognised for their competencies and qualifications on a public register.

CTSP Registrar, Kevin Matthew, says: “We are delighted so many security professionals have seized the opportunity to have their qualifications, competency and experience recognised on the CTSP Register. The industry is now a step closer to raising professional standards in the technical security sector, however, our ultimate ambition is for every practitioner to reach the CTSP standard and take their place on the Professional Register.”

All applications are assessed by the Registration Manager, so only those with the necessary credentials are admitted to the Register. The core disciplines covered include: Video Surveillance Systems (CCTV), Access Control, Intruder and Hold up Alarms and Fire Alarm Systems. The publicly searchable register lists Registrants and the discipline they are qualified in.

The CTSP application process is conducted online and costs £25, with a £50 annual registration fee payable upon admittance to the Register. The Registrant then becomes part of a certified professional network and has the right to use post-nominals (e.g. John Smith CTSP) and the use of the CTSP logo on promotional materials. About the Peter Greenwood Award

The Peter Greenwood Award is the longest established individual award in the security profession and has been in existence since Peter’s death in 1995. Peter was a former Head of the Electrical Contractors’ Association Security Group and was involved with its Fire Group. He was also a founder member of the Security Industry Lead Body (SILB).

And meanwhile Tony Maskens, who was BAFE Technical Schemes Manager until his retirement in 2016, won the FSA Ian Marsh Fire Award, for his work on industry standards, quality control schemes and third party certification of companies and end users.

Steve Martin, Head of the FSA and ECA Director of Technical, said: “Many congratulations from the FSA to both Tony Maskens and Paul Tennant on winning FSA awards for their services to the fire, emergency and security industry over many years. With the FSA celebrating its 10th birthday this year, we are delighted to have two such fantastic ambassadors for our industry being recognised during the industry’s leading awards gala – IFSEC’s Security and Fire Excellence Awards.”
