Midlands annual fraud conference

by Mark Rowe

Of the several regional fraud forums that were set up around the UK in the 2000s, the Midlands one is among the most flourishing still; as shown by the line-up and sign-ups so far for its 13th annual conference, in Birmingham on Thursday, February 13.

After a welcome by David Clark, Chairman of Midlands Fraud Forum, Amber Burridge of fraud prevention trade body CIFAS will give a ‘state of the nation’ report. Among the speakers are Tiggey May and Dr Bina Bhardwa, of the Institute for Crime and Justice Policy Research, Birkbeck, University of London; Graham Taylor, of HM Revenue and Customs, on how the HMRC carries out fraud investigations; Nicola Whiting of the Worcester-based cyber firm Titania; Richard Plumb of audit firm KPMG, on phishing; and John Marsden, of Iovation, on global, cyber-enabled, frauds. Aidan Larkin, head of the Asset Recovery Department for Wilsons Auctions Group in the UK and Ireland, will cover POCA (the Proceeds of Crime Act); and John Davies and Nicola Smith of the Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB), will offer a case study.

The event runs as in previous years at Tally Ho Conference Centre, on Pershore Road, postcode B5 7RN. Paying to attend includes membership of the MFF for a year, which includes entry to the forum’s smaller masterclasses on fraud topics, usually in Birmingham.
