Installer Abel have instigated external management training to develop leaders and create a more dynamic organisation. Abel director Pat Allen says: “Our previous training was about keeping staff up to speed with legislation and changes in technology. When the ECA launched its Management Development Programme, we saw an opportunity to improve levels of line management and strengthen management structure across all departments.”

The Management Development Programme is tailored to meet the needs of ECA and FSA member firms and is approved by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). Iain Macdonald, Head of Education and Training for the ECA says: ‘We developed high quality courses to support our members in growing thriving businesses. Abel Alarm has recognised the importance of planning for the future and embedding these skills within their teams.’

Abel initially trialled the course with one candidate who came back so enthusiastic about his experience that many of his colleagues wanted to attend. Pat Allen adds: ‘As a privately-owned business established in 1965 we have many people who could be considered “old guard” but we wanted to create a culture where the next generation of engineers and managers can share their views more readily. We know they have an important contribution to make – plus it’s vital to our succession planning. I believe what makes this training programme different to others we have tried is that it concentrates on the improvement of the individual, it is a scheme that meets the needs of any growing company.”

The firm says that the programme has played a key role in creating a culture of wanting to learn within the company. ‘All of the acquired skills ultimately strengthen our management structure across all departments and for us it’s just the beginning of a continuous journey to improve the way we work and the service we provide,’ Pat Allen adds.  Visit www.abelalarm.co.uk.
