ICS summit

by Mark Rowe

From September 22 to 28, SANS ICS Amsterdam 2015 will host four dedicated training courses for those tasked with securing Industrial Control Systems. The event at the Radisson Blu, Amsterdam opens on Sunday, September 22 with a two day ICS Security Summit at NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky, also in central Amsterdam.

The two day ICS Summit brings together program managers, control systems engineers, IT security people and critical infrastructure protection specialists from asset owners and operators. The training body says SANS European ICS Security Summit provides the opportunity to learn and discuss the newest and most challenging cyber security risks to control systems and the most effective defences.

The summit is chaired by Michael Assante, SANS ICS Curriculum Director who was most recently Chief Executive Officer of the National Board of Information Security Examiners (NBISE) and Chair of NBISE’s National Board. The summit also welcomes over 20 speakers and panellists including experts from National Grid, Shell, Aramco, Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, Thales and Mandiant.

As well as the foundational course, ICS410: ICS/SCADA Security Essentials led by Justin Searle, SANS’ new course ICS515: ICS Active Defence and Incident Response runs for the first time in Europe – led by SANS Instructor Robert M Lee.

Trainers say that ICS515 uses a hands-on approach that shows real-world malware and breaks down cyber attacks on ICS from start to finish. Students will gain a practical and technical understanding of concepts such as generating and using threat intelligence, performing network security monitoring, and executing threat triage and incident response to ensure the safety and reliability of operations.
