Emergency Response Officer course

by Mark Rowe

Templewood Training Services has launched an accredited training course, in response to terrorist attacks in major cities, such as those in Brussels, London, Nairobi, Orlando and Paris. The Emergency Response Officer Level 3 qualification is tailored for first response staff working in the security industry and in customer-facing roles for those those working at large public gatherings, such as shopping centres, events, office complexes and airports.

Trainers say that the course content is aligned with the City of London Police’s Project Griffin and the official National Counter Terrorism Security Office’s Project Argus, and encompasses all classes of emergency, including facility failures and building collapse.

The Emergency Response Officer Level 3 course is a joint training venture between Templewood Training Services and its specialist training partners, Global Reach Training Ltd; the trainers report that it’s the only course of its kind accredited by Industry Qualifications (IQ); IQ is approved by the UK’s national regulator of qualifications Ofqual and by the Scottish regulator SQA Accreditation. The trainers say that those who have taken the course will more efficiently be able to provide first response to respond to incidents, co-ordinate others and provide information to the relevant emergency services or authorities to resolve the incident or emergency. And the trainers say that for investors, property companies and managing agents it offers:

more capabilities of site teams and their awareness of their surroundings;
speedier team/individual response to incidents;
reassurance to clients, managers and the public; and
reduced risks to organisations and incidents.

Comments

Robert Clark of Templewood, said: “This course is an essential component of organisations’ emergency response plans. Following an emergency incident, the first response period is the most critical: an Emergency Response Officer is part of the immediate response to an emergency situation. They coordinate, without putting themselves or others at risk; and are responsible for identifying, reporting and assessing an emergency situation, as well as assisting victims and briefing and aiding emergency services.”

Harvey Goldsmith CBE said: “Having promoted and managed some of the world’s most popular music events, I know how important good security can be to any event of mass attendance. Any training that can enhance the capabilities of both security and event staff alike can only be a positive.”

Dick Andrews OBE added: “Any mass congregation puts people at risk and it is no longer reasonable to assume that all emergencies can be prevented or handled by security services and police. This accredited qualification will be invaluable for first response staff, enabling them to assist the emergency services and provide lifesaving assistance in the vital 60 minutes immediately after an incident. The course provides an immediately available reaction and response capability for those in the security industry.”

And Frank Armstrong QPM, former Assistant Commissioner in the City of London Police, said: “As a former Assistant Commissioner in the City of London Police, with the national police lead for Project Griffin and Business Reassurance, it is hugely encouraging to see staff being trained in response to emergencies as it is they that are likely to be the first responders. Accredited training initiatives from the private security sector are certainly to be commended.”
