Want to find out what it’s like to tackle a fire in a terraced house or to be in the command centre of a major road traffic collision? At next week’s Emergency Services Show (NEC, Birmingham 25 to 26 September), emergency responders will be able to step inside the Fire Service College Transformation IGLOO to find out. Powered by IGLOO Vision and G2G3 technology the 3D Transformation IGLOO is an immersive and engaging training experience that recreates the Fire Service College’s training ground with a complex incident unfolding all around.
At the indoor and outdoor exhibition all emergency services can experience simulations, watch live demonstrations, handle the latest equipment and update training. Amputee actors (trained in theatrical techniques and medical procedures) from Amputees in Action can be seen around the show, adding realism.
Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service is bringing a car crash simulator to the show and West Midlands Fire Service in partnership with 4ORTY2 Ltd will be demonstrating the impact of alcohol on driving skills and awareness thanks to its remote control electric go-kart. Visitors can drive the go-kart with and then without a specially developed pair of “beer goggles” which simulate the effect of alcohol.
A programme of water rescue exercises, organised by SarBot (a UK underwater search, rescue and recovery charity) will take place on the NEC’s own Pendigo Lake. Visitors can watch a specially trained springer spaniel sniffing the water from the front of a small rescue boat to alert the team to the location of the “victim”. Other exercises will demonstrate the capabilities of the underwater search and rescue robot, and a range of sonar devices, while visitors watch the rescues tracked on large screens. Meanwhile to highlight the need for appropriate water emergency training the Royal Life Saving Society is holding a Throw-line Challenge.
Other live rescue demonstrations in the outdoor exhibition area include roadside rescues organised by the Road Haulage Association. Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service will be showcasing The Ex-Tractor, an HGV “transformer” designed to demonstrate the nationally-adopted six phase HGV rescue approach. Visitors can also see the Metz XS Turntable Ladder and West Midlands Fire Service Rope Rescue Team in action, and are challenged to find their way around the dark maze on the ISG Infrasys stand using the new ISG X380 thermal imaging camera.
Rescue exercises taking place inside include rope rescues from Crofton Engineering’s specially designed training tower and bariatric and animal rescues on the West Midlands Fire Service stand. West Midlands Fire Service will also be screening a video clip showing the impact this summer’s fire at the Jayplas recycling transfer facility in Smethwick had on the region’s fire service. The fire was the largest ever in the West Midlands, committing 35 fire engines and causing £6 million of damage. Members of the organisation’s Business Educational Safety Team along with Legislative Fire Safety Officers will be giving advice on measures that can be taken in the future to reduce and minimise the impact of such an occurrence happening again.
Visitors to the Physio Control Learning Centre are invited to see how accurate their manual chest compressions are in a live trial, as the company launches its TrueCPR™ Coaching Device. They can also try out their CPR skills on Laerdal’s new Resusci Anne and Resusci Baby manikins. Feedback on the core parameters of CPR (compression depth, release, rate, ventilation rate and volume) allows responders to measure, assess and improve their performance. Zoll will also be holding a CPR challenge, SP Services will be demonstrating cervical immobilisation with the Multi-Grip Head Immobiliser and Ferno will be demonstrating patient lifting and transport.
Technology being demonstrated includes software that simulates social media and citizen reactions to incidents (E-Semble), command support systems (VectorCommand) and body-warn cameras (Pinnacle Response). Training 4 Resilience will be demonstrating the latest version of the Pandora Advanced Training Environment for those involved in managing crisis and emergency situations. Over 400 stands are showcasing.
