Do the right thing

by Mark Rowe

How the best ethical workplaces can support staff and reduce fraud risk is the topic of a Fraud Advisory Panel morning event in London on June 5.

Poor workplace ethics always mean weaker fraud defences. When a concerned employee feels they have no choice but ‘go public’ the consequences are often serious for organisation and whistle-blower alike. This two-hour breakfast briefing from 8:45am will investigate those critical connections between business ethics, workplace values and staff behaviour, examining the steps organisations can take to cultivate a corporate culture that increases fraud resilience.

Cathy James is the chief executive of Public Concern at Work. She will chair the event, at the Chartered Accountants’ Hall, Moorgate Place, London EC2R 6EA, provide an overview of the session and outline the latest developments in whistle-blowing policy and practice.

Wendy Addison is the founder of SpeakOut-SpeakUp. She will provide an account of her own extraordinary personal journey – from international group treasurer to homelessness – having exposed the biggest corporate disaster in South African history.

Professor Roger Steare is honorary visiting professor of organisational ethics as well as corporate philosopher in residence at Cass Business School. He is author of Ethicability: how to decide what’s right and find the courage to do it and creator of MoralDNA personality profiling. Professor Steare will look at the importance of ethics, culture and people in reducing fraud risk.

Cost is £15 plus VAT to panel members; £25 plus VAT for non-members. Email [email protected]. Visit http://www.fraudadvisorypanel.org/.
