Cyber Streetwise talk

by Mark Rowe

In Our Hands and Off the Street: Changing Behaviour to Stay Safe Online is the title of an April 9 evening event by the Fraud Women’s Network, in London. It runs at the Tower Grange Hotel, 45 Prescot Street, London, E1 8GP. Speakers are for an hour from 6pm. A reception follows with drinks and canapés sponsored by FICO.

Speakers are Peter Wilson, Director, Awareness & Behaviour Change, at the Home Office; and David Mitchell, Fraud Project Manager, Financial Fraud Action UK.

Peter will be talking about Cyber Streetwise, a cross-government campaign led by the Home Office, funded through the National Cyber Security Programme in the Cabinet Office, delivered in partnership with the private and voluntary sectors. The initiative is ground breaking in that it targets segmented groups of individuals and businesses and delivers specific messages through their preferred channels in a way designed to engage and provide tools and resources to help them to help themselves. This approach is then measured through an ongoing quantitative tracker to evaluate the uptake of improved online behaviours.

“Are you streetwise online? Visit www.cyberstreetwise.com for tips helping you, your family and your business stay safe online.”

David will be talking about what the banking industry is doing on this issue, including “Out of Your Hands” a tailored set of resources for primary and secondary school pupils which bring to life the distinction between risky and protective behaviour. With almost two-thirds (64 per cent) of children having their first bank or building society account by the time they start secondary school, and 44pc of 16 to 18 year-olds using internet banking, there is a need for young people to be aware of simple fraud prevention advice. Instilling safe behaviours in young people at an early age can help to protect them against these crimes. Visit http://www.outofyourhands.com
