Training

Cyber security date

by Mark Rowe

Cyber Security for Industrial Control Systems is the topic of an IET seminar on February 6 at the Holiday Inn Bloomsbury Hotel, London.

The chair of the day, Mike StJohn Green, a former Cyber Security Advisor to Government, will open by covering the forces at play given that the environment for Critical National Infrastructure is reportedly far from safe and secure. How to make cyberspace sufficiently safe and secure?

Richard Piggin, Cyber Security Manager at the engineering consultancy Atkins will go over the open source intelligence on SCADA systems. Luis Parrondo, Principal Network and Security Consultant at Rockwell Automation, will argue that the management of network Infrastructure must become smarter, and offer best practices to protect intellectual property, and achieve tamper prevention and detection.

Marc Tritschler, Operations Technology Security Management Specialist for PA Consulting, will use real, anonymised examples from across the energy and utilities sectors for ways to assess and reduce risk for ICS (Industrial Control Systems). Nick Trim, Director of Services, Darktrace will suggest that cyber threats are the ‘new normal’. From insider attackers to sophisticated external adversaries, threat is always present in the energy sector, and defending the perimeters and building higher walls is not viable. He will outline a new approach for the new era of threat: detection of anomalies in real time, within internal networks and systems

Other speakers include CPNI; Roger Cumming, Technical Director, Security and Intelligence, Management Consultant, Atkins; and Thomas Brandstetter, CEO, Limes Security and Professor for Industrial Security (Former Programme Manager Product CERT, Siemens).

Hugh Boyes, Cyber Security Lead, The IET; Richard Piggin, Cyber Security Manager, Atkins; and Andrey Nikishin, Special Projects Director, Future Technologies, Kaspersky Lab will then hold a panel discussion on what does the UK need to train and certify its Industrial Control Systems engineers and technicians in cyber security.
