BSIA at IFSEC

by Mark Rowe

As IFSEC International nears, at London’s ExCeL in June, a number of BSIA (British Security Industry Association) representatives are ready to impart advice on a number of issues from city security to access control. The BSIA’s Amanda Caton looks at what IFSEC visitors can expect from the association this year.

UK-based security suppliers are anticipating another successful show as IFSEC returns to London for a second year, and several BSIA spokespeople are set to share their knowledge within the show’s Keynote and Convergence, Security Solutions and Safe Cities theatres.

Convergence

Kicking off the BSIA’s contributions in the Keynote and Convergence Theatre on June 16 are Mike O’Neill and Dan Solomon of Optimal Risk Management Ltd, members of the BSIA’s Specialist Services Section. They will focus on ‘Cyber Security: Confronting Current and Future Threats’ and will examine the importance of upskilling IT professionals to meet evolving cyber threats.

On day two of the show, Wednesday, June 17, the BSIA’s sessions begin at 11am with an insight into ‘Access Control as a Service’, in which a representative from BSIA member company, Kaba Ltd, will provide an overview of the features and functionalities of the latest access control innovations, as well as answering questions that arise for providers and future adopters of Access Control as a Service.

Later that afternoon, the BSIA’s chairman, AD Group’s Pauline Norstrom, and Chairman of the BSIA’s CCTV Section, ATEC Security’s Simon Adcock, will be joined by Surveillance Camera Commissioner, Tony Porter QPM LLB, to reflect on the success of the Surveillance Camera Code of Practice and explore the options for its extension to include privately-owned systems.

On the first and final days of the show, the BSIA’s Chief Executive, James Kelly, will be leading a panel discussion on the ‘State of the Nation: Future Security Threats’, for which he will be joined each day by industry figures to discuss upcoming security trends.

Safe Cities Academy

In the Safe Cities Academy on Wednesday, June 17, Geoff Zeidler, Immediate Past Chair of the BSIA, will speak at 11am on ‘The Police and Security (PaS) Initiative: Collaboration to increase Public Safety and Reduce Crime’. The PaS initiative was launched in December 2014 and featured in the January 2015 print issue of Professional Security magazine. PaS’ aim is to increase collaboration between the Met Police and the private sector in London, with BSIA leadership provided by Geoff Zeidler.

Later that day, at 3pm, Optimal Risk Management Ltd’s Mike O’Neill returns to the stage to discuss Security Risk Management Strategies for Safer Cities, while on Thursday 18th June at 14:00, Dirk Wilson of Sector Security Services Ltd (Vice Chair of the BSIA’s Police and Public Services Section) will explore the lessons learned about security searches from the London 2012 Olympic Games and how these have informed a new Code of Practice for security searches.

Solutions

In the IFSEC Security Solutions Theatre, Pauline Norstrom will address end-users, advising them on the key considerations to make when choosing a security supplier. Assessing the potentially hidden costs of some low-price solutions, Pauline will reinforce the importance of security market knowledge in the procurement process. Pauline’s session begins at 1pm on the Tuesday, June 16.

On Wednesday, June 17, at 14:00, Dirk Wilson will address IFSEC’s Security Solutions Theatre on ‘CCTV Control Room Compliance’, exploring recent revisions to BS7958 – the Code of Practice for CCTV management and operation – while making recommendations on best practice in obtaining evidence from CCTV.

Members’ lounge

Finally, in the midst of a busy three days of networking, sales and education, BSIA members can head to the association’s stand (B1350 – last year is pictured) to enjoy the free members’ lounge for client meetings, an update on BSIA activity, or just a cup of coffee.
