BC days

Counter-terrorism, trauma and emergency management are among the topics at BCI World 2017, the two-day annual conference and exhibition of the Business Continuity Institute (BCI).

The event at the Novotel London West at Hammersmith, pictured, starts on Tuesday, November 7, with a speech by Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, who recently retired as Met Police Commissioner; and then a speaker from the UK official National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).

Other speakers include Richard Bond, Senior Consultant, Protective Intelligence, at the engineering consultancy Arup; Chris Moore, Head of BBC Business Continuity and Incident Management; Vicki Gavin, Compliance Director, Head of Business Continuity, Cyber Security and Data Privacy, The Economist Group, publishers of The Economist weekly newspaper; .

Claire Powles, Head of BCS at ClearView Continuity and Felix Marrero, Head of Global Security at Newell Brands will give a joint presentation on how to bring in a business continuity programme when the business is going through change; which requires employee engagement and management buy-in.

Besides UK speakers, there’s an Australasian flavour as invited speakers include Linda-Jane Richan, Corporate Support Officer, New Zealand Parliamentary Counsel Office and Esther Newman, Senior Advisor, Business Continuity and Emergency Management, NZ Inland Revenue, on last year’s earthquake in Kaikoura, when many organisations in New Zealand’s capital city, Wellington, invoked business continuity arrangements; and David Crompton-Guard, Manager, Business Continuity, Metro Trains Melbourne.

Day one closes with an evening dinner and awards ceremony. Day two, November 8, opens with Robert McAllister, Senior Consultant at the consultancy Instincif, on ‘reputational resilience’ in a crisis, perhaps arising from digital media or social media comment about products and services.

Other topics include how new technology such as drones, artificial intelligence, virtual reality and wearables may affect business continuity; ‘Work Area Recovery’; the international standard ISO 22316 Organizational Resilience Principles and Attributes; and the ‘invocation’ of a business continuity plan, from an initial phone call, setting up the recovery site to recovery back to normal.
