ASIS hail CPP passes

by msecadm4921

The ASIS UK Chapter has hailed its 26 CPP examination passes in May; over twice the number of passes of any previous course. Having reached its 35th anniversary, the ASIS Certified Protection Professional (CPP) certification has seen nearly 10,000 security people gain the qualification.

The examination was the culmination of five months of distance learning and classroom study, with many candidates admitting that this was the hardest study process that they had undergone since school. While the CPP like ASIS is US-based, the organisers point out that the CPP knowledge base is produced by committees from all parts of the world.

Among the more well-known brands to support their security professionals in CPP and PSP certification so far this year have been Adidas, Burberry, EADS, Shell, Thames Water, Astra-Zeneca, BG, G4S, Sony, Nomura, and Experian.

Joining the UK Chapter contingent have been candidates from as far afield as Botswana, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, France and Austria. This latest CPP group included several UK security contractors working under challenging circumstances in Nigeria, Algeria, Iraq and the maritime environs of Somalia.

As for the value of CPP, ASIS reports anecdotally that one regional security advisor for one of the UK’s biggest companies remarked recently that when recruiting, those with CPP are at a significant advantage of being hired.

The next combined distance learning and classroom CPP ‘preparation programme’ will begin in January 2013. If you are interested in achieving CPP before then ARC is offering an all-classroom two and a half-week course from September 3 to 19.  Contact [email protected]  for details.

If the selection, specification and operation of physical security systems is of relevance to your role you may wish to consider the Physical Security Professional (PSP) Certification.  Distance learning for this November course begins in July.  More details from [email protected] .  This very useful certification will teach you how to select, deploy and project manage barriers, electronic detection systems, CCTV, contraband detection, access control systems etc.  We will be holding an Orientation Day for this programme on 12 July, prior to commencement of the distance learning phase of this programme on  July 23.

David Cresswell of ARC Training adds: Paul Barker has reminded me of some interesting history concerning CPP and the UK Chapter.

Paul took his CPP in Boston, MA, in 1993. At that time there were just three CPPs in the UK. Such was Paul’s enthusiasm for CPP that by 1995 he had persuaded ASIS to allow him to introduce it to the UK. Running, if I recall correctly, two courses a year, in just three years under Paul’s instruction, UK CPP numbers rose to a staggering 94! Paul efforts were recognised by the UK Chapter when he was awarded the Mervyn David Award. It’s easy to forget people like Paul when they are tucked away in a far off corner of Africa, but it is to him that we CPPs all owe a great debt of gratitude for laying the UK foundations of this most successful security management qualification programme. For many of us, it has significanlty enhanced our career prospects.

A point of history for those who have recently taken CPP and struggled with the POA Manual – in those days Paul tells me there were 67 listed text books!
