Apprenticeship plan

by Mark Rowe

Compass Group UK & Ireland reports it plans to build the number of Compass apprentices to 1500 by the end of 2017. The firm says that it has trained 3000 apprentices in the last five years.

Compass Group employs over 60,000 people and recruits 500 apprentices a year. Apprenticeship training is already offered in food service, business administration, security, cleaning, professional cookery, chef leaderships, finance, Human Resources, leadership and management. The addition of a 1000 apprentices will see new roles being provided across all sectors with apprenticeships being offered to employees. The apprenticeships are being managed by Melanie Hayes, Resourcing and Development Director for Compass, who was recently appointed to a new Apprenticeship Delivery Board (ADB) by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills. The ADB has been tasked with advising the Government on how it can hit its target of three million apprenticeships starts by 2020.

In January 2016, Compass Group was named as a Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer for the first time by the National Apprenticeship Service. Dennis Hogan, Managing Director for Compass Group UK & Ireland, said: “I am delighted to be announcing that we will be significantly growing the number of Compass employees joining the Compass Apprenticeship Scheme in the coming two years to 1500. As one of the top apprenticeship employers in the country we are extremely passionate about delivering high-quality training and learning programmes for our apprentices and we are excited about broadening our apprenticeship programme across our broad portfolio of businesses. We recognise the importance and value apprenticeships can bring to both the individual and also our business.”

And Skills Minister Nick Boles MP said: “Food for thought: If you have a passion for catering or want to start your career in finance, why not take up one of the many apprenticeships Compass Group has on offer. Apprenticeships open doors for young people around the country. That’s why I am committed to three million more apprenticeships by 2020.”

To mark National Apprenticeship Week, Compass Group will be holding a number of events for its apprentices to showcase their talents.
