Apprentice ultra successful

by Mark Rowe

Jack Eastwood is among winners in 2014 Apprentice of the Year awards. At Rossendale-based security inks company Hydanis Ltd, Laboratory Technician Jack Eastwood won in the 19 to 23 year old age group. Jack from Rossendale, 23, works in the company’s laboratory where his main duties are to develop specialty inks with features such as electrical conductivity, security or food-safe. He is also responsible for safety standards, record keeping and training staff.

His company mentor Ian Eastwood, who is also the Technical Director put forward Jack’s name into the competition. Eastwood said: “Jack started from scratch, knowing nothing about ink and the security industry. He has developed an in-depth working knowledge of both ink formulation and technologies such as making conductive inks. For example, he is one of the few people in the world to have developed a UV-cure conductive offset ink. He shows commitment working long hours to achieve his goals and researching issues that occur. In doing so he looks at problems in different ways, coming up with very creative solutions to otherwise unsolvable problems.”

Jack said: “I am proud and honoured to win this award when I am doing something that I really enjoy. The Apprenticeship scheme allows me to do my job and develop a broader understanding of all the things required to make a good employee great.”

Jack’s prize was an I-Pad Mini supplied by the category sponsor training provider Business Impact UK, a trophy and a certificate. Martin Wray from the firm was delighted to sponsor the award.

“Jack is a very worthwhile winner. He has settled into the company very well and is making above average contributions to both the apprenticeship and Hydanis. He is a valuable team member and strives very hard to succeed in his daily tasks and activities.”

Martin Wray said: “When we are asked to provide an apprentice, we look after every stage in the recruitment process including writing job descriptions, advertising, screening suitable applicants and interviewing. We take a lot of care and time to make sure we get the best candidate every time and judging by the number of nominations for this competition, we must be doing something right. The apprentices are all winners and demonstrate to employers that there are many good youngsters out there who are ready to learn and excel. It’s our job to find them first and train them to the right standards for the employer.”

In the last five years, Business Impact has enrolled more than 13,000 learners from 887 companies all over the UK. Typically apprentices are recruited for business administration, telesales, manufacturing, health and social care and customer service rolls. The company recently enrolled apprentices for companies such as The Co-operative College, Chandlers BMW, PG Legal and WM Morrison PLC supermarket chain.
