Senator Security, one of the UK’s leading independent security services providers is delivering tailored security services within the Utility and Energy sector for RWE npower at their facility at Aberthaw Power Station in South Wales.
RWE npower is a UK energy company, part of the RWE Group, which serves about 6.5 million customers and produces approximately 10% of the electricity used in the UK. Aberthaw Power Station is sited near Cardiff, in the Vale of Glamorgan, on the north bank of the Bristol Channel, and can generate 1,500MW of electricity for the National Grid System: enough power to meet the needs of 1.5 million households – equivalent to the total population of five cities the size of Cardiff. Aberthaw Power Station aims to be one of the most efficient coal-fired power stations in the UK and has recently invested £230 million in environmental upgrades.
The layout of the site and the need to protect the on-site people, RWE npower business partners, customers and the public, requires a security company with a specialist skill base and experience; the site is on the shoreline with a public promenade skirting a large part of the site, an awareness of the potential hazards within a heavy industrial and rail traffic environment – this, along with gatehouse access control, public visits and tours, heavy mobile plant usage and patrols to all areas of the 185 hectare site.. There are also partner or associated operations on-site with multiple vehicle and HGV movements. The site has significant construction, annual maintenance outage programmes and development projects – without doubt, an evolving and dynamic environment in which to deliver security.
There are several hundred people on the site at any time; contractors, suppliers, office and operational staff together with public visitors attending The Aberthaw Centre for Energy and Environment (ACE2) – a facility for schools, colleges and community groups throughout South Wales that provides interactive educational programs – Senator’s team has to be vigilant and aware at all times: required to provide an effective, proactive and courteous service to all, protecting people, property and assets from trespass, vandalism, sabotage, theft and malicious damage – Senator Security provide a highly visible deterrent utilizing their 4×4 patrol vehicles; providing a ‘preventative policy’ while ready to respond to an incident within minutes. Senator has fully vetted, trained and qualified management and personnel, constantly investing in it’s people and training to support their field operatives along with deploying a proven system of on-site management and communications backed up by senior management conducting regular site visits and meetings with the site management team.
