Police designing out crime conference

by msecadm4921

On the 31st of January the 2012 Secured by Design Training Conference took place at the impressive Palace Hotel in Manchester.

Protect UK Fog Cannon Security were among twelve other SBD businesses who attended the police CPDA’s and ALO’s conference.

160 Police delegates from across the UK attended the conference to get updated on a wide range of issues including crowd dynamics, government’s crime prevention policy, business improvement districts, designing out crime and burglary and robbery.

“The conference was an ideal opportunity for PROTECT UK to launch our new Rapid Response Security system that we’ve designed specifically for the Police” explained Barry Harper Police Liaison Manager at PROTECT UK.  “As a retired police officer I am acutely aware of the challenges the police face in the fight against burglary and robbery.”

Over the three day conference Barry ran four Fogging Systems workshops that outlined what fog/smoke security is and how it works in burglary and robbery situations.  Each workshop was fully subscribed and lots of interest and questions from the police.

“It is always good to get feedback and find out what issues the police are facing today” said Barry “for example, it never occurred to me that dead rhinos were being targeted just as much as live ones!”

Getting foggy

“This year at the conference we were able to run live demonstrations of our new Rapid Response unit outside” continued Barry “and I was impressed how many braved the extreme cold of minus degrees to get to our marquee in the hotel loading bay to experience the Fog security.”

Police response

“The police were enthusiastic about our new Rapid Response Security system recognising how effective it is at stopping burglary quickly” explained Barry. “We have developed the security system to be quick and easy to fit, because speed to secure a vulnerable premises in a burglary situation is crucial.”

The Rapid Response Security system stands independently with its own sensors which enables it to be placed anywhere. It only requires plugging in to the electric and within minutes it’s ready to protect the property or business.

Success during Christmas holiday

“This fast acting security system proved its worth during the Christmas holidays when police in Nottingham were having problems with persistent break-ins at a large national discount store” explains Barry. “The same day of receiving the call from the police I installed the Rapid Response to secure the store.  This instantly stopped any further break-ins. In fact a week later when the burglars saw our warning signs in the window of this store they sensibly decided to leave it alone. Unfortunately they obviously didn’t want to go home empty handed because they went across the road and broke into a well know chemist and stole all the perfume!”

Designing out crime

The Secured by Design conference always proves valuable to the police who, over the course of three days can find out about new crime prevention products and crime reducing strategies while being able to catch up with colleagues and share intelligence.

It is also an ideal opportunity for Secured by Design companies to find out from the police what issues they have today and what they need to be able to crack down on crime.

Now that’s what you call real bad luck!

At last year’s SBD conference at the same hotel a couple walked into the bar off the street and tried to sell drugs.  Their faces were a picture when they suddenly realised they’d approached off duty police officers who were surrounded by 200 of their colleagues enjoying an evening drinks reception!
