New Tool to Crack Cycle Crime

by msecadm4921

Bikesecure is a new tool in the fight against bike crime and it is the brainchild of a keen cyclist and former Met Police Officer, Paul Troughton. Bikesecure is a simple but effective way for cyclists to register their bike’s unique serial number when buying in-store or online.

How Bikesecure Works

Bikesecure is an online registration portal that allows cyclists to register their bike’s details and serial number. What’s more, Bikesecure links into Cybertill’s web-based cycle electronic point of sale (EPoS) system. This allows retailers to capture the bike and cyclist details at point of sale making the whole process seamless. Cyclists can also update their personal details and any bike modifications online.

Bikesecure is proactive and communicates with those registered cyclists to ensure their details are correct. There is a small administration charge of £12, which lasts for the lifetime of the bike, even if the lawful ownership changes hands. Bikesecure also allows prospective buyers to check lawful ownership of the bike through the website’s free search facility, helping to prevent unassuming buyers parting with their hard earned cash on stolen bikes.

In London, Bikesecure founder Paul, became aware of the alarming rates of bike thefts, and as a Police Officer, he realised the tracking schemes in place were inadequate and did little to deter thieves or repatriate stolen bikes with their rightful owners. So he set up Bikesecure, but he wanted to also get bike shops on board, in order for them to capture all the required information at point of sale. Hence Paul worked with specialist cyclist EPoS provider, Cybertill. The system has been trialled at the UK’s largest cycle shop, Wheelbase.

Toby Dalton, director of Wheelbase commented. “Bikesecure is a superb way for new like buyers to obtain a full and formal registration of ownership for their new, two-wheeled, pride and joy and a great service to offer our customers! The advantage of Bikesecure over other registration schemes is that it can be activated at the time of purchase. The customer account and full product registration is created when the till transaction is processed through Cybertill.”

Paul Troughton, founder and director of Bikesecure, commented, “At Bikesecure our aim is to have every new bike sold in the UK registered to us, therefore establishing a secure national database. The hassle free registration is done automatically at point of sale making Bikesecure a unique product in its field. The frame serial number search facility for checking lawful ownership, is free for anyone to use. Police forces and insurance companies can use this facility as an aid to repatriate stolen goods. We are excited to be working with Cybertill who are a leading supplier in EPoS systems for the cycle retail industry.”

Cybertill CEO Ian Tomlinson commented, “Over the past few years where many retail sectors have struggled, cycle retail has grown. More people are buying and investing in their bikes. But now it is not unusual for people to spend thousands of pounds on their bikes and to have more than just one, so it is critical they are registered with an effective registration scheme. A key benefit of Bikesecure is that it links with Cybertill’s cloud based EPoS system. So cycle retailers can register a bike’s details at point of sale, and what’s more, as Cybertill is web-based it all happens in real time, so it registers with the Bikesecure database immediately.
