Things to consider before hiring a PI

by Mark Rowe

If you’ve found yourself in a situation where you need the specialist services of a private investigator and if you haven’t gone through the process of finding one before, then there are a few important things to consider before you choose the right private investigator for you, your needs and also your budget, writes Dan Burke, of Delta 74 Private Investigations.

It’s imperative that the private investigator you opt for will be able to carry out a thorough, quality investigation and provide you with an in-depth report upon its conclusion. With that in mind, here are a few things you should think about before you hire a private investigator near you.

Do they have the relevant credentials?
It’s paramount that the private investigator you’re choosing is fully insured and also holds the most appropriate certifications and accreditations. Most notably every private investigator must be registered with the information Commissioners Office (ICO) as they will be handling very confidential data. Professional private investigators complete lots of training courses to specialise in their respective fields so ask for proof of this and who their training was carried out with.
An experienced and professional private investigator will be able to provide you with expert services and meticulous investigations that have been carried out with absolute skill. If they aren’t legitimate, then you cannot be guaranteed a quality investigation and at worst, complete discretion and safety.
Upon communicating with your chosen private investigator, before agreeing to their services, ask them for any trade association memberships and enquire with those bodies to see if they’re reputable and evidence that they’re insured and registered – they shouldn’t have a problem with this.

Do they offer the specialist service you need?
Before choosing a private investigator, make sure that they can offer you the service or services you need before committing yourself. Whether it be for commercial or domestic reasons, it’s important that you’re having the most appropriate investigation carried out to seamlessly meet your requirements.
Delta 74 Private Investigations are able to carry out a number of different services, including: people tracing, private surveillance, background checks and matrimonial investigations, to name a few. With transparent quotes and a team of highly-trained professionals at the helm, you can look to them for quality private investigations in Derby and the surrounding areas.

What is their reputation like?
In order to get an idea of what their reputation is like, you should start looking at some customer reviews. It would also be worth looking at them on sites like Google to check their authenticity and how reputable they are. The responsibility to check how legitimate a private investigations firm is, falls to you. By doing this, you’ll be sure to have an investigation carried out that you’ll be wholly satisfied with and all for a price that falls within your budget.

Do their fees come within your predetermined budget?
Before you go looking for a private investigator, do some research into how much, roughly, you can expect to pay for a service and/or investigation. An approximate ball park figure can be found online and these estimates are often extremely accurate. Use this to determine how much you’d like to spend on a private investigation and do your best not to pay over the odds.
For a more accurate idea of how much you’ll need to pay, get in touch with a number of private investigators near you and ask for a quote. The price you pay will depend on the service and how in-depth you’d like the investigation to be. The quotes you’re given should be transparent so as to ensure you aren’t incurring additional, hidden costs.
The prices may differ slightly, but there shouldn’t be any prices that are considerably higher than the rest or considerably lower. Often, people will use their list of quotes to make an ultimate decision on which private investigator they would like to use.

Will they provide you with a detailed report?
A private investigator should be able to guarantee you, at the beginning, a detailed report upon conclusion of the investigation. The whole point of a private investigation is that it provides you with a sufficient amount of evidence in order for your dilemma to come to an end. As such, it’s imperative that you’re given a report of their findings once the investigation has finished.
Check that they can do this prior to signing a contract with them, although the promise of a detailed report upon conclusion of the investigation might already be outlined in the contract. Therefore, you must be sure to read through the contract and any terms and conditions of the service before signing your name against anything.
