ST15 next stop: Bristol

by Mark Rowe

Bristol is the next stop for Security TWENTY 15, the Professional Security series of free to attend conference-exhibitions around the country.

It’s at the Marriott City Centre Hotel on Wednesday, April 15. Our confirmed speakers include Mike Gillespie of Advent IM, on cyber security; the private investigator (PI) Richard Newman; NSI director Simon Banks; Chris Aldous, to update on the industry body ASIS International; and conflict management trainer Vince Donovan. The manufacturers Y3K, Canon, Xtralis, Axis Communications and Arecont Vision will update on their products. As at our previous ST15 Nottingham conference in Nottingham in February, featured last issue, ST15 South will be chaired by IPSA chairman Mike White.

Menu
As ever, we aim to bring you a varied menu (and you are welcome to stay for the buffet lunch!) of speakers. We want to offer something for everyone – whether you’re in site and asset protection, an installer of products, a specifier or a consultant.

What you need to know and register

For exhibitor and other details click on the ‘events’ part of our website www.professionalsecurity.co.uk. You are welcome to turn up on the day, but it would help us plan the catering if you registered online beforehand. Parking: yes, an NCP multi-storey beside the hotel, postcode BS1 3AD, and the parking at nearby Cabot Circus shopping mall has the Park Mark Award for security. ST15’s a chance to network, to connect with people you wouldn’t otherwise, learn something that you can apply back at work, or just a chance to get away from your desk!

About the speakers
Mike Gillespie, a director of the Security Institute and part of the Malvern Cyber Security Cluster, argues that cyber-security is not only for the cyber-specialists – and that is not only because it’s so hard to recruit cyber-security people, an issue in itself. He says: “Businesses are connected by the internet all over the world; local businesses may have supply chain partners thousands of miles away just as frequently as down the road. Organisations have a responsibility to each other to make sure they are taking adequate precautions both technically and corporately to ensure their information assets are properly secured.” Richard Newman, a former president of the Association of British Investigators, will speak about PIs; and training, a field he’s entered lately. Chris Aldous has worked on such major projects as the London 2012 Olympics. He was a senior security consultant with Buro Happold, the engineering company; and in 2011 set up Design Security Ltd. He has a BA degree in social policy and criminology; and holds the ASIS qualifications CPP (Certified Protection Professional) and PSP (Physical Security Professional). He’s going to speak about how those certifications helped him work on such capital builds as the Games main stadium. He was on the technical committee for the Private Security Contractors Standard (PSC) as adopted by the UK Foreign Office as a benchmark process; and is a member of the technical committee developing an American National Standard for Risk Assessments.

Body talk
Body language; lone workers defusing conflict and managing the anger of service users – for instance if you’re a nurse visiting people’s homes; dealing with abusive phone callers; and basic breakaway and street self-defence for staff, whether for a charity or a security company. These are the topics for Vince Donovan. He’s been a Director of Conflict Solutions Training & Consultancy Ltd for 13 years. He and colleague Richard Marshall formed the company in Cardiff to specialise in personal safety training. Vince retired from South Wales Police in September 2014, after 30 years as an officer. His last 15 years were in community safety, working in the Minorities Support team, and on crime prevention, emergency planning, student liaison, hate crime and supporting asylum seekers and refugees across Cardiff. There for the last six years he worked as a ‘Prevent Engagement’ officer, with those considered vulnerable to radicalisation or violent extremism.
