Research into benefits

by Mark Rowe

In the November 2014 print issue of Professional Security magazine, we offer a digest of the Security Research Initiative (SRI) latest study – into security excellence, as defined and debated by buyers and providers of security.

The next SRI topic is the broader benefits of security. As the researchers at consultancy and trainers Perpetuity say, in both corporate security departments and among security suppliers, there has been a very narrow focus on the benefits from services provided; in fact most often that focus has been on security benefits. But there is evidence that other, non-security, benefits are derived from having good security. Hence the research to look at that contribution that security makes to issues such as staff well-being, company reputation and brand, trust in business, business processes, corporate social responsibility, profit making and commercial advantages. The aim: to discuss the true value of security from a new evidence base.

Besides speaking to security people, the researchers want to talk to other business departments (such as HR, Marketing, Finance, Procurement and Legal) to understand how security helps them in their roles.
