Ops centre opens

by Mark Rowe

A provider of Security-as-a-Service for the cloud unveiled its European Security Operations Centre (SOC) in Cardiff. Established to support demand from its customer base in Europe, the Alert Logic European SOC will be staffed by local security and threat intelligence staff, delivering what the firm terms a fully managed, enterprise-grade service, protecting customers through rapid detection and response to cyber threats and other security incidents.

Officially launching the new centre, Welsh Government Economy Minister Edwina Hart said: “I am delighted to welcome Alert Logic to Wales and the technology and expertise they bring. The decision to locate their new European headquarters in Central Cardiff Enterprise Zone sends out a strong clear message that the city is a prime location for technology companies and can offer all the essential elements for growth including a high level skills base and infrastructure.”

Gray Hall, CEO at Alert Logic, says: “IT teams are not resourced to adequately respond to the marked increase in security and cyber-attack threats. The opening of our new European SOC, coupled with our recently launched UK datacentre, enables us to be closer to our European customers, delivering them continuous protection, and deep security and compliance insight, no matter where their IT resides, whether it’s in the cloud, on-premises or in a hybrid environment. 2014 has been a key year for us and our expansion plans, and a fully operational security operations centre to meet the needs of our European customers is another major step forward. While the Alert Logic SOC provides around the clock security monitoring, daily log review, web application firewall management and advanced anomaly detection, the research team is hard at work researching emerging threats, reviewing threat trends and creating new security content that feeds the Alert Logic platform.” Hall concludes.

David Howorth, VP EMEA adds: “Since our initial decision to invest in Wales back in April, we have consistently been impressed with the level of support that we have received from the Welsh Government and the City of Cardiff Council in helping us to establish our operations in the UK. The fact that we have been able to attract and recruit such a large number of highly skilled employees from its initial inception seven months ago, to being fully operational, is testament to the ambitions of the Welsh Government, City of Cardiff Council and the surrounding Universities to cement the region as a UK hub for Cyber security.”

And Phil Bale, Leader of the City of Cardiff Council says: “Convincing Alert Logic to establish its European Security Headquarters Operations Centre in Cardiff was a great coup for our Capital City and a testimony to the skills base in the Capital Cardiff Region. We look forward to working with Alert Logic to grow their operations in Cardiff and to further develop the city and its wider region as a centre of excellence for cyber security.”
