Family award

by Mark Rowe

The Gloucester-based fire safety and security installer, Allcooper took an award at the Business & Professional Life Family Business Awards 2013.

The ‘Family Business of the Year’ Award (Gloucestershire) was presented to Allcooper for being in the judges’ words ‘an outstanding family business that has led the way, with family values at the forefront of their brand’. It was awarded to the company by a judging panel made up of business people from across the Cotswolds, who singled Allcooper out from some 150 other businesses.

Started by father and son, Gary and Gerard Cooper in the late 1980s from their home on the outskirts of Gloucester, Allcooper soon required additional family members brought in to meet demand.

Roman, Gary’s son and Gerard’s brother, joined the company as an apprentice three months after it was formed, and brother Tim spent 15 years at the company before moving on in 2005.

Today, the company employs 80 staff, including eight family members from three generations, who are involved on a daily basis across a range of business functions. It has evolved into a multi-million pound turnover company, with around 5,000 domestic and commercial customers across the UK and into Europe.

Allcooper Director, Roman Cooper will mark the firm’s victory, along with other winners, at a lunch hosted by Business & Professional Life at The Manor at Weston-on-the-Green, Oxfordshire on Tuesday, June 4. He said: “This award came completely out of the blue and we are thrilled to have been identified as a leading light. It is very special to have several generations of the family working together to uphold Allcooper’s high standards and develop the business for the future; however credit must go to all of our staff who have adopted the family values at the heart of the company”.

In 2009, the company took the national prize for Best UK Family Business in the £1m to £5m turnover category, at the Coutts Family Business awards. Visit www.allcooper.com.
