Crimestoppers launch in sport

by Mark Rowe

Crimestoppers Wales has launched a project at the newcomers to the Premier League, Cardiff City. The freephone crime-reporting line charity is looking to tackle crime through sport over the next three years.

The project launch came at half-time during Cardiff’s first Premiership home fixture against Manchester City, Crimestoppers had also been presented with a cheque for £25,000 as part of the club’s ‘Thanks a Million’ campaign.

As organisers point out, sports equipment, playing venues and club premises all have an attraction for criminals, which can cause disruption and cost to the victims. Crimestoppers Wales has had a donation from Cardiff City Football Club and a former crime journalist, Percy Hoskins. Percy was the chief crime reporter for the Daily Express newspaper and the founder member of the Saints and Sinners – a dining club in Fleet Street, the old London home of national newspapers.

After he passed away, a fund in his memory was set up that was to be used for ‘fighting crime’. Crimestoppers Wales is the latest recipient of this fund.

The charity will be calling on all national governing bodies and professional sports in Wales to help kick crime out of sport in Wales and to get involved and support through sport. All those concerned in sport, whether participants, officials, coaches, administrators or spectators, can all make a difference by making that all-important call to Crimestoppers with guaranteed anonymity.

City partnership

Chief Executive Mick Laurie said, “As part of the support through sport, Crimestoppers is delighted that Cardiff City Football Club has joined the crime fighting team at Crimestoppers. We are also delighted that Crimestoppers Wales has been selected in the Cardiff City Football Club “Thanks a Million “campaign to receive a most generous donation of £25,000.”

And Julian Jenkins Commercial Director at Cardiff City Football Club who set up the partnership with Crimestoppers said: “We are delighted to assist Crimestoppers in their objectives of helping the community in reducing the fear of crime and arresting those responsible for committing crime in our community. This initiative complements our strategy as a club of involving the whole community, particularly our young fans who have responded so well to what we are all seeking to achieve.”
