Award for crisis director

by Mark Rowe

Jonathan Hemus, pictured, managing director of Insignia Crisis and Reputation Management, was named Director of the Year in the small and medium sized enterprise (SME) category of the Institute of Directors (IoD) Midlands Director of the Year Awards.

Based in Birmingham Road, Sutton Coldfield, Insignia provides crisis management and communications support for clients including Cathay Pacific, Lidl, NFU Mutual and Stagecoach. Founded in 2008, Insignia specialises in providing crisis management planning, training, exercising and consultancy support; for managing organisation-threatening situations while under pressure.

Jonathan said: “I was surprised, excited and proud to have been named as director of the year in the IoD Midland Awards. The business was born from my passion to end the needless devastation to people’s lives and livelihoods which occurs when crises are mishandled.

“I love leading the fantastic Insignia team and working with amazing clients to give them the capability and confidence to do and say the right things on the most challenging days of their business lives. With Covid-19, this year has seen businesses of all sizes have to respond to the biggest crisis the world has seen in peacetime.

“It has been such a tough year for everyone so knowing we have made a difference when businesses needed it most has helped me to stay motivated. It remains important that each member of the Insignia team is supported and developed, so this recognition is the icing on the cake.”

Jonathan’s experience in helping global and national organisations navigate crises meant his advice was in demand during the coronavirus outbreak. As a speaker on crisis management, he joined Aston University as a visiting lecturer in June and is a guest lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Central Florida and the University Católica in Lisbon. Next month will see Rethink Press publish his new book based on his experience, titled Crisis Proof.

IoD West Midlands regional chair Brian Hall said Jonathan had won the Midlands SME award in recognition of Insignia’s achievements and its culture of staff development. He said: “Jonathan demonstrated that he is at the helm of a successful business with a strong reputation in his sector. The judges acknowledged the coaching culture within the business and the focus on empowering and rewarding team members.

“The award to Jonathan also recognised his company’s ability to be agile and its proactive approach in these challenging times.”
