Lone worker service

by Mark Rowe

Among the speakers yesterday at the Lone Worker Safety Conference 2014 at London Olympia was Dennis Hunt, Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS foundation trust’s Health, Safety and Security Manager.

He spoke with Chris Allcard, head of lone worker services at Reliance High-Tech. Dennis, pictured, was last month recognised at the annual Personal Safety Awards run by the Suzy Lamplugh Trust and supported by NHS Protect, the central National Health counter-fraud and security management body. Dennis received his award at a ceremony at the British Medical Association in Tavistock Square, London.

The awards celebrate individuals and organisations that put personal safety at the forefront of their work. The ceremony was hosted by Jacqui Hames a former detective and co-presenter of Crimewatch for 16 years. Speakers included Rachel Griffin, Director of the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, and Sue Frith, Managing Director of NHS Protect.

There were nine award categories and Dennis was winner in the ‘Award for Keeping Staff Safe at Work’ category, sponsored by NHS Protect. This award is for an inspiring individual who has demonstrated commitment, and dedication to protecting NHS lone workers from violence, abuse and aggression. Nominees needed to demonstrate a range of methods to improve the safety and security of lone workers on behalf of their health body.

In his nomination submission Andrew Wellings, Head of Facilities and Maintenance, wrote:

“Dennis in my opinion, is an unsung hero, he does not look for glory but is dogged in his approach to ensure staff use Lone Worker Devices to reduce violence to staff in the Trust and this is backed up by the yearly reduction of violence in our sites.”
