Barnsley Hospital recording

by Mark Rowe

The CCTV digital recording equipment at Barnsley Hospital was approaching end of life and had some compatibility issues with legacy and new equipment. An upgrade of CCTV recording was decided, to overcome the compatibility of different kit. The incumbent maintainer and the hospital consulted and some manufacturers were shortlisted. One of these being Tecton Limited of Fisher’s Pond. After a demonstration by Tecton, that company’s Liberator recorder was chosen. The project was put out to tender and bidders from around the country were involved. Longcross Security Ltd was one; the installer chose the Tecton equipment as part of their proposal. Alex Fisher Security Engineer at Longcross Security, says: “The main reason for choosing the Tecton equipment was the level of support we had received from the manufacturer, something which had been sorely missed by the previous manufacturer’s equipment. Tecton also agreed to support the equipment for a minimum of ten years, a real plus sign for continuity and reliability. In addition they agreed to warrant the machines for a period of three years, something which Longcross had passed on to the hospital as part of their proposal. This in my opinion was the final turn of the key in the lock in securing this business.” Some 109 cameras are now recorded by Liberators at Barnsley. Any camera can be viewed anywhere a keyboard or PC is placed. PAL or IP cameras can be recorded. Here as elsewhere, the manufacturer stresses the low power required by the product; less than 43 Watts per recorder. A user can copy footage to CD; disks removed from the Liberator can be played back in another Liberator or on a PC, thereby offering bulk evidence recovery. Council public space CCTV and London Underground, even nuclear submarines are among other users of Tecton CCTV recording.
