App for mental health

by Mark Rowe

Hub of Hope is an app which points vulnerable people to local mental health services and facilities. Northumbria Police are encouraging its officers, staff and members of the public to make themselves aware of the services on offer in their area, by downloading the app which brings together grassroots and national mental health services.

Dame Vera Baird QC, Police and Crime Commissioner for Northumbria, said: “We are all working to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and reinforce the message that it’s good to talk openly about it. Northumbria Police are delighted to once again support Mental Health Awareness Week, and I hope this new app helps those experiencing mental health issues to receive the help and support they need.

“I’d like to thank our officers and partners for their continued commitment to providing the best possible support to people experiencing mental health issues – not just this week, but every single day of the year.”

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Cole, who volunteers as a suicide intervention negotiator for the Tyneside force, hopes Hub of Hope can increase awareness of the local services available to residents across Northumbria.

DCI Cole said: “Your mental health is a very precious thing which is just as important, if not more, than your physical health. In recent years, the Force has seen an increase in the number of calls we receive from those in crisis and in need of urgent help and assistance. Dealing with people in crisis can be physically, emotionally and mentally very tough for officers and so over the years we have worked hard to raise awareness and to ensure our staff are fully trained and equipped to deal with incidents like that.

“However, we know every situation will be different and no one person will experience mental health issues in the same way. Having access to the Hub of Hope will ensure our officers can consistently signpost people to the relevant services so they can access the support and help they need. We would also encourage members of the public to visit the website or download the app so they are fully aware of what is available to them in their local area.”
