Perimeter award

by Mark Rowe

Zaun Limited, the Wolverhampton-based manufacturer of perimeter protection products, was on March 12 crowned winner of the Security Innovation Awards 2013. Zaun’s Rapid Deployable System (RDS) fence was used first at the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe meeting in Brighton last April then on a ‘tour’ from Brighton to Birmingham via Manchester for the three main political parties’ autumn conferences.

The award is now in its 10th year. Paul Painter, director of finance and sales at Zaun Limited, said: “This award will mean a tremendous amount to every member of the Zaun and Highway Care teams who have worked tirelessly to develop, trial, manufacture and install this solution for the protection and security of the public.

“While the product itself has already received positive feedback from the police and industry, it is hugely exciting to win this evening, cementing the importance of the product within the wider security landscape.”

Paul Everitt, chief executive of aerospace, defence, space and security trade association ADS said: “The UK security industry has a global reputation for innovation and technological advancement. These are essential attributes in delivering safety and security in complex environments with the minimum disruption to public life. I am delighted that this year’s Security Innovation Award has attracted outstanding examples of UK expertise and the selection process was incredibly tough.

“Zaun’s RDS fencing stood out as a technology that not only offers a superior security product, but also as one which will save time, improve efficiency and allow security providers, including the police force, to deploy resources in ways that will best serve the public.”

The Security Innovation Award ceremony was held at the Security and Policing Dinner 2013. The dinner hosted more than 250 guests from industry and marked the start of this year’s Security and Policing Exhibition in March 2013.

The award runner-up was 3rd Forensic, with the Metropolitan Police and their Forensic Image Linking and Management database. This database is managing unidentified images submitted to police from sources such as CCTV, mobile phones and social media from start to finish. The database has already produced results in linking images to violent and persistent criminals, offering stronger court evidence.

Heald Ltd won a Highly Commended award, for the Matador sliding bollard.
