Huawei 5G Equipment to be Removed from the UK by 2027

by msecadm4921

It is estimated that the implementation of 5G is set to cost £2 billion more than originally expected and face delays of up to two years due to the latest announcement from the government. UK Mobile network providers have been banned from purchasing new Huawei products after 31st December and will also be required to remove all of the firms 5G equipment by 2027.

Digital Secretary Oliver Dowden informed the House of Commons of their decision after careful considerations were made of the sanctions imposed by Washington, who claim the firm pose a national security threat.

What is 5G?

5G is the new generation of mobile technology, following on from previous 3G and 4G generations. The new generation provides increased networks speeds as well as increasing capacity, providing access to thousands of devices in a small area. These technological advancements will improve mobile gaming, high-quality video speeds and eventually communicate with driverless cars. The 5G network is already available in some UK cities/towns with limited connectivity.

Mr Dowden advised that the ban on the technology firms’ equipment would delay the rollout of 5G in the UK by a year. He also added, “This has not been an easy decision, but it is the right one for the UK telecoms networks, for our national security and our economy, both now and indeed in the long run”.

The sanction in the United States only impacts equipment that is installed in the future which means that the current kit, supplied by Huawei, used for the 2G, 3G and 4G network poses no security threat. Huawei said the move was “bad news for anyone in the UK with a mobile phone” and threatened to “move Britain into the digital slow lane, push up bills and deepen the digital divide.”

However, this ban does not stop Huawei from selling their smartphones to consumers.
