Fraud switch

by Mark Rowe

The National Fraud Authority will close by the end of March 2014, the Home Secretary Theresa May has announced.

Mrs May, pictured, said that the National Crime Agency, with its Economic Crime Command, will lead and coordinate the national fight against fraud, or ‘economic crime’ as it is called. She said: “While the National Fraud Authority has been successful in raising awareness of fraud and improving co-ordination, the focus should now be on cutting economic crime.”

The NFA work will be broken up between the National Crime Agency (strategic development and threat analysis), Home Office (work to raise awareness of fraud, including delivery of the national e-confidence campaign) and the Cabinet Office (development of the Counter-fraud Checking Service).

Action Fraud, the national fraud and financially-motivated internet crime reporting centre, will become the responsibility of the City of London Police, which has long had a particular focus on financial crime.
