University lock upgrade

by Mark Rowe

As part of a security upgrade across six campus sites, the University of Southampton has specified Mul-T-Lock’s patented security master key suites for their halls of residence.

Mul-T-Lock reports that it has maintained a direct working partnership with the in-house locksmith team at the university for 14 years, supplying thousands of sets of Nemef Locks, handles and Mul-T-Lock cylinders an year, all operated on a master key suite.

Most recently, the university completed an upgrade of security at the Glen Eyre and Bencraft halls on the campus, bringing them into the security scheme operated throughout the uni.

Shane Parkes, Locksmith Supervisor at Southampton University says: “University premises present a number of security challenges due to the open nature of the campus sites. There are different access requirements across all the facilities to consider. Working closely with Mul-T-Lock we developed a specification which offers high security and is flexible to accommodate these issues and remain cost effective. The master key operation is invaluable to keep maintenance to a minimum and the patent protection allows us better control of how many key copies are in existence.”

The Nemef lockcases offer a latch reversing mechanism and suit euro and oval cylinders. With Mul-T-lock’s patented Interactive cylinder platform, users have control of key management, to give efficient maintenance, it is claimed.

Steve Ross, Managing Director of Mul-T-Lock, says: “The changing nature of the university ‘ecosystem’ in the UK, with significant developments such as rising tuition fees has many implications, including consequences for the safety and security of students, staff and the public. The legal and reputational issues arising from any failure to protect and secure people, physical assets and information data, are also increasingly severe. Hence, it is integral for suppliers like Mul-T-Lock to work closely with Universities like Southampton, to understand the bespoke security requirements and provide the best solutions to protect all those who attend.”
