The University of Sunderland has gained the Secured Environments accreditation. On behalf of UK police, Perpetuity Research carried out an audit in July.
Secured Environments is for organisations – such as campuses, shopping centres and hospitals – to show that they have adopted six key principles for protecting themselves against crime.
A certification lasts for three years and confirms that a holder’s approach to security is proportionate, credible and of a high standard.
Security Manager, Colin Ferguson, said: “I am extremely proud that, not only have the team achieved this, but we have done so during a global pandemic. It demonstrates that our security is being delivered to a very high standard and shows the University to be a dedicated and professional organisation. Moreover, being audited by an external, independent assessor clearly demonstrates that the University of Sunderland is dedicated to delivering a secure and safe environment for all students, staff and visitors.
“Achieving this award has involved a collaborative approach from the Vice Chancellor [Sir David Bell], senior management and numerous colleagues who supported the security team in their endeavours, my thanks go to everyone involved.”
