Schools 2014 document

by Mark Rowe

The Secured by Design scheme has launched a New Schools 2014 document online. It’s to aid those developers, architects and planners of schools and colleges. The guide sits alongside Secured by Design’s other guidance documents including New Homes and aims to promote best practice solutions to ‘design out crime’ in schools.

The document begins with urban design and planning policy generally, then goes through layout and design of perimeter security, entrances, vehicle parking and access, the building shell, and lighting. The rest of the guide is given over to physical security specifications, for perimeters, the ‘building envelope’, and internal physical and electronic security. For instance, a public address system is recommended; and it is suggested that computer files are backed up off-site for disaster recovery.

The design guide is free to download and is available on the Secured by Design website and includes guidance on; layout of communal spaces, use of lighting, access and landscaping, highlight planning decisions that reduce the risk of crime and anti-social behaviour. It also details the standards required by ACPO Secured by Design and the Police services and complements the Secured by Design Principles and Design Guides, which can also be found on the site.
