School access

by Mark Rowe

Wellington School in the Somerset countryside is a co-educational, day and boarding school, with 750 pupils aged from two to 18, including 160 sixth form students.

Jim Pendleton, Estates Manager at Wellington, has been responsible for the recent upgrade of doors from digital keypads to wire-free smart access control for building security and better control of movement of staff and students around the campus.

Installed by local SALTO dealer TLS Security was the XS4 platform. Fifty-plus doors in boarding houses, offices and external doors have been upgraded with SALTO’s XS4 E9450 slim-line electronic escutcheons supported by XS4 2.0 wall readers and controllers.

With a large variety of models, XS4 electronic escutcheons can fit virtually any door, the makers say, including wooden and PVC doors as well as those with narrow metal frames. All are wire-free and networked through SALTO Virtual Network and SALTO Wireless network for access control in real time.

Richard Bond, Director at Taunton-based TLS Security says: “The SALTO XS4 solution makes is simple for the school to manage the access rights of everyone on campus. Security measures in any educational establishment need to be robust and effective but unobtrusive. Parents need to trust educational institutions to look after their children, so it is vital that they provide effective 24/7 security and ensure both students and staff are safe and protected at all times.”

Staff and students at Wellington now have a flexible security solution, the security firms add. Jim Pendleton says: “We like the fact that we now have audit trail information available to us and that we can also set up the system to allow access to specific rooms or areas for selected periods only, with doors auto locking at pre-specified times as necessary.”
