London student living

by Mark Rowe

Chapter White City is recently built student accommodation in Shepherd’s Bush, west London. It has a video surveillance system of network cameras, recorders, IDIS Center video management software (VMS) and accessories, from the Korean manufacturer IDIS.

Chapter White City, run by residential property management firm Greystar, serves students from local institutions including Imperial College, BPP University and London College of Fashion UAL. On-site amenities include bedrooms and studios, study spaces, a gym, social areas, meeting rooms, a laundry, secure entry, and 24-7 security staff.

An incumbent surveillance system was providing inadequate coverage and poor image quality. Triple Star Fire and Security was asked to provide an upgrade; the installer recommended IDIS products. Triple Star designed a system which more than doubled the number of cameras across the site, delivering high definition (HD) images, without increasing operating expenditure. The cameras cover the building’s exterior, including entrances, storage areas and the car park, as well as internal communal areas including lift lobbies, corridors, and kitchens. A recurring problem, of damage to parked vehicles during refuse collection, w rasesolved within days of the system being commissioned thanks to the availability of indisputable video evidence.

Outside are fitted 5MP IDIS vandal-resistant infra-red (IR) domes that feature vari-focal lenses, wide dynamic range (WDR), and IR LED for images in all lighting conditions, including night-time coverage up to 30m.

IDIS DirectIP minimised disruption for students and day-to-day operations as it made the installation faster and easier for Triple Star’s engineers, with mutual authentication and seamless compatibility of the H.265 cameras and 32-channel NVRs. H.265 video compression combined with IDIS Intelligent Codec also contributed to the reduced total cost of ownership, the manufacturer adds, by lessening the data storage burden by about 60 per cent.

Matt Edwards, Security Systems Director at Triple Star said: “Greystar is delighted with the IDIS solution because it gives them outstanding performance now and the best TCO value long term, with low OPEX costs and assured flexibility. Building on this success Triple Star is undertaking more projects for this leading property developer.”

And Jamie Barnfield, Senior Sales Director at IDIS Europe added; “With this end-to-end video surveillance upgrade from IDIS, Greystar now has the assurance that students are better safeguarded, and their personal property protected, giving them the confidence to enjoy their university experience. We look forward to working with Greystar on future projects as IDIS continues to strengthen its position as a technology leader in the residential sector.”
