Campus fittings

by Mark Rowe

Loughborough University with NHS partners recently built a National Centre for Sport & Exercise Medicine East Midlands (NCSEM), pictured. The facility has achieved BREEAM Excellent rating and will be used for research and to provide medical services for injuries, particularly those caused through physical sport, a Loughborough specialism.

The physical security product company ASSA ABLOY reports it has worked with the university on a security design manual so that products are consistent across the campus. Providing a full ironmongery specification, products from ASSA ABLOY, ASSA and UNION, have been fitted throughout the site, including Falkner-Eggington student accommodation and Schofield building.

UNION supplies keyULTRA master key cylinders to the uni, which allow students the right level of access to lecture theatres and facilities, while restricting access to private spaces. ASSA provided its CLIQ master key suite, enabling building managers to grant access or to block lost or stolen keys easily, minimising administrative work. And ASSA ABLOY door closers, Trimec electric strikes, UNION lock cases, lever handles and fittings have also been installed around the campus.

Phil Sheppard, Clerk of Works – Building at Loughborough, said: “The safety of our students is always paramount, so it was crucial that we worked with a trusted manufacturer when creating our security design manual. NCSEM contains areas for university research and NHS patients, so it was fundamental to put access control in place that would create separate and secure accommodation for NHS outpatients, while allowing students and staff to move around the research facility freely. ASSA ABLOY were able to supply the solutions for the building to work efficiently.”

Simon Wilson, National Sales Manager – CLIQ Remote, at ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, said: “Loughborough University is a major client for us and we have worked extensively with them over the years. We have been able to utilise our experience within the education sector to provide solutions for the university, across residential halls, as well as teaching and research facilities. We also provided on site training for contractors for the installation of ASSA ABLOY products and provide one point of contact for on-going maintenance support.”
